Putharekulu and Pootharekulu are two spellings of the same sweet. Putharekulu is the commonly used English and Hindi transliteration. Pootharekulu is the Telugu language spelling closer to the original pronunciation. Both refer to the same GI-tagged Atreyapuram paper sweet — there is no difference in the product itself.

Putharekulu is called a paper sweet because of its defining characteristic — the outer layer is made from rice starch cooked into sheets so thin they are almost translucent, resembling delicate paper. These paper-thin sheets are what give Putharekulu its unique texture — it dissolves almost instantly on the tongue, releasing the ghee and sweetness within. The Telugu word "Puthareku" literally refers to these rice paper sheets. No other Indian sweet has this characteristic texture.
